Alonso quickest from Gonzalez as 0.093s splits Moto2 Practice top four

The Colombian sets a new Motegi Moto2 all-time lap record to front an ultra-competitive Friday afternoon field

David Alonso (CFMOTO Power Electronics Aspar Team) fronts the Moto2 field heading into Saturday at the Motul Grand Prix of Japan after the Colombian set a new class lap record at the Mobility Resort Motegi. The lap? A 1:47.508, which was 0.033s quicker than second-place Manuel Gonzalez (Liqui Moly Dynavolt Intact GP), with the championship leader 0.027s ahead of third-place Izan Guevara (BLU CRU Pramac Yamaha Moto2).

After a stone penetrated his bike’s radiator in FP1, Guevara didn’t suffer the same bad luck in the afternoon session and got straight down to business to set his personal best time early in Practice. His time was only beaten by the top two in the closing stages, as Tony Arbolino (REDS Fantic Racing) – despite a crash – finished P4.

2025 Moto2 Motegi winner Daniel Holgado (CFMOTO Power Electronics Aspar Team) rounded out the top five ahead of Austrian GP second-place finisher Filip Salač (OnlyFans American Racing Team); the Czech rider was just 0.156s away from the top time.

Home hero Ayumu Sasaki (Momoven Idrofoglia RW Racing Team) heads straight into Q2 in P9 behind Adrian Huertas (Italtrans Racing Team) and Alonso Lopez (ITALJET Gresini Moto2), with Senna Agius (Liqui Moly Dynavolt Intact GP) completing the Friday top 10.
