Japanese rider Hiroki Ono got another chance to complete a full Grand Prix season in Moto3™ in 2015, having started the 2011 campaign in 125cc but ultimately making just four appearances that year, with the Caretta Technology Forward Team. Ono’s racing career kick started in 2007 in the national Japanese 125cc championship and he went on to compete in the Italian CIV 125cc series in 2009 and 2010. In 2012 and 2013 he rode in the Asia Dream Cup of the Asia Road Racing Championship finishing runner-up and then becoming the champion. Ono has also had regular Grand Prix wild card rides over many seasons. His third place finish in the 2014 FIM CEV Repsol Moto3™ category saw him signed up by Leopard Racing to ride alongside Danny Kent and Efren Vazquez in the World Championship for 2015. His speed was clear but crashes often ended promising rides. In 2016 he joined Honda Team Asia alongside Khairul Idham Pawi.
