Spanish national championship regular Alberto Moncayo first tasted the 125cc stage in 2008 as a wildcard entry at Jerez, finishing in 25th place, and in 2009 he rode four more GPs. His displays earned him a permanent ride for 2010 and he placed 13th overall (best finish 5th at Motegi) to earn the Rookie of the Year title. In 2012, Moncayo started on board a Kalex KTM machine with the Bankia Aspar Team (renamed Mapfre Aspar Team before the Sachsenring race) in the Moto3 World Championship. He then split with the team after Mugello, yet secured a ride with the Andalucia JHK Laglisse team wit its FTR Honda for the remainder of the season. In 2013 he steps up to the Moto2 class with the Arguiñano y Gines Racing team on a new chassis to the class, the Motobost.
