Forward duo reflect on solid Qatar test results

Top man Aleix Espargaro and his experienced American colleague Colin Edwards were both satisfied with their performances in testing at Qatar, though for Espargaro of course there will be concern for his brother Pol who injured his left collarbone on Sunday.

Indeed, Espargaro closed the final preseason test at the Losail Circuit in P1, recording a best time of 1’54.874, less than two tenths from Jorge Lorenzo’s pole position time from last year (1’54.714).

The Spanish NGM Forward Racing Team rider continued the test work started in Sepang, focusing on the set up of his bike in preparation for the season opening race that will take place at this circuit in two weeks time. He was also able to ride fast in a 22 lap race simulation carried out on the final day.

“I’m really happy with the work done today,” stated Espargaro. “I was fast on the single lap but I was also able to ride with a strong pace. I’m very satisfied because in the race simulation I could ride with the same lap times Lorenzo did last year in the race, so I’m confident and I look forward to the first race.”

It was a positive final day for Edwards too as he improved his lap time, chipping a few tenths off his previous day’s best time. In total he completed 31 laps and finished seventh in the combined classification over the three days with his best time of 1’55.978 on Sunday being a second better than his quickest Friday effort.

The Texan rider commented, “I’m quiet satisfied with these three days of testing. I was able to improve my lap times and also my feeling with the bike. Today we worked on the electronics with positive feedback. There is still room for improvement but we have taken a step forward. I’m comfortable with the bike and I look forward to the start of the season.”
