Antonelli: “I didn't expect the victory”

An emotional Antonelli takes the first win of his Moto3™ World Championship career at a dramatic bwin Grand Prix České republiky.

The scheduled 19 laps of the Moto3™ World Championship race were reduced to just 12 after a red flag on the first lap brought all the riders into the pits. Fortunately as a full lap had not been completed, Niccolo Antonelli (Ongetta-Rivacold) lined up on pole for the restart. The 12-lap dash saw riders frantically battle for position and a large group of riders emerged, all dicing for the win in typical Moto3™ style.

It all came down to the last lap, Antonelli able to play it perfectly, defending a small lead as fellow Italian Enea Bastianini (Gresini Racing Team Moto3) put on a dramatic and spirited last lap charge. There has been little doubt over Antonelli’s speed in 2014 and 2015, however a plethora of crashes saw him unable to deliver on his potential until today. The VR46 Academy rider now hopes to continue his success in the coming rounds. It was announced this weekend he will remain with Ongetta-Rivacold in 2016.

Niccolo Antonelli: “The first victory is a great emotion for me, I am really happy! I knew I was fast but I didn't expected the victory. I really want to thank the team, we have been great and we worked well. Now we have to improve again and be in the front in all the races".
