Lorenzo strikes first in FP1

Jorge Lorenzo lays down a marker in a rain affected FP1 to finish ahead of Marc Marquez and title rival Valentino Rossi.

Movistar Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo topped a rain affected Free Practice 1 at Phillip Island as the MotoGP™ paddock got the Pramac Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix underway. The man who trails Rossi by 18 points in the standings set a 1’30.047 in a session that saw drops of rain throughout, before a harder shower in the final few minutes brought it to a premature end.

Lorenzo’s time was over two seconds off his own Pole Record from 2013 (1’27.899) as riders felt their way around in the damp and windy conditions (track temp. 20˚C).  Repsol Honda’s Marquez ended the session in second, 0.348s off the pace of Lorenzo, as he continues to recover from the broken bone in his left hand.

Rossi improved late on in the session to complete the provisional front row, but was 0.525s off the pace of his teammate. Marquez’s teammate Dani Pedrosa (+0.622s) was fourth, with LCR Honda’s Jack Miller pulling off the surprise of the day as the leading Open class rider in fifth, just 0.665s behind Lorenzo.

Miller’s teammate Cal Crutchlow (+0.735s) was sixth fastest on the Factory spec Honda, 0.070s ahead of the man he beat to sixth in the race at Motegi, Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Bradley Smith.

Ducati Team’s Andrea Iannone was eighth ahead of Pol Espargaro (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) and Maverick Viñales who completed the top ten.

American Nicky Hayden (Aspar MotoGP Team) was 13th, with EG 0,0 Marc VDS’s Scott Redding in 17th and Eugene Laverty (Aspar MotoGP Team) in 20th.

Karel Abraham’s replacement in the AB Motoracing Team, Anthony West, was 24th fastest. Damian Cudlin (E-Motion IodaRacing Team), who is substituting for the injured Alex De Angelis, was in 25th.
