Fabio Di Giannantonio (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) and Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) have made their way out of an exhilarating MotoGP™ Q1 at the Gran Premio d’Italia Oakley. Showers in FP4 at the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello caused everyone to start the session on wet tyres, but it soon became apparent that they needed to be on Michelin slicks. While Di Giannantonio finished fastest and Marc Marquez next-best, timing worked against Jack Miller (Ducati Lenovo Team) on a drying track and he is set to start 13th on Sunday afternoon.
Miguel Oliveira was fastest after the first flyers on a 1:55.380 but Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team-mate Brad Binder was already switching to slicks. As the track dried out, he blew the wet-tyre times out of the water by laying down a 1:52.402 on his first full lap of the session, and that forced everyone else’s hand.
Miller is the master of mixed conditions and Marc Marquez decided to use ‘Thriller’ as his reference. For the last three laps in a row, the Australian went quickest, only to be beaten moments later by the Spaniard. That would have been fine for Miller except, a handful of seconds behind them on the race track, Di Giannantonio was bettering both. In the end, Gresini rider set a 1:47.219, the factory Honda rider a 1:47.294, and the works Ducati pilot a 1:47.621, while Binder ended up sixth in Q2 and hence 16th on the starting grid.
