Zannoni takes the Championship lead after a dramatic Race 2 victory

The Italian takes a maiden MotoE™ victory and the Championship lead at the Catalan GP after a great battle with Gutierrez and Zaccone

Race 2 for the FIM Enel MotoE™ World Championship was even more dramatic than the first at the Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya. This time around, it was Kevin Zannoni (Openbank Aspar Team) who charged to victory after a three way fight in Barcelona - allowing the #21 to take control of the Championship. The pace was hot, and the pressure was high with Race 1 winner Oscar Gutierrez (Axxis-MSI) on his tail to the line. Gutierrez crossed the line 0.474s behind Zannoni, with Alessandro Zaccone (Tech3 E-Racing) joining them on the podium.

Mattia Casadei (LCR E-Team) managed to take the race lead on the entry to turn one for the second time this weekend. It was a fierce start with all riders making it cleanly through the opening laps in Race 2 at the Catalan GP. Although Casadei led the opening lap it was soon Granado who would fight back after gaining the perfect slipstream along the main straight – going from third to first.

The LCR duo led at the front before all of Casadei’s work would soon come undone after losing the #40 lost the front at turn 10 – crashing out of second position. Further heartbreak would unfold two laps later with Nicholas Spinelli (Tech3 E-Racing) crashing for the second time in one day on lap four of the race. Spinelli crashed at turn 5 which would soon claim and end Granado’s race – falling on the fifth lap and adding to the LCR E-Team’s heartache.

After all of the incidents, it would become a three-way fight for the lead with as many laps remaining, as Gutierrez soon took the lead and attempted to complete the double in Barcelona. On the main straight on the final lap, Zannoni pounced – trying to gap the #99. This would be a crucial point of the race, with Zannoni putting together a perfect lap and winning from eighth on the grid.

In fourth was Jordi Torres after a cracking ride from seventh on the grid and to add to the Openbank Aspar Team’s success at the Catalan GP. Behind Torres was both Dynavolt Intact GP MotoE™ riders of Hector Garzo and Lukas Tulovic in fifth and sixth. After crashing in Race 1, KLINT Forward Factory Team’s Andrea Mantovani made a great recovery to seventh, to score solid Championship points. Matteo Ferrari (Felo Gresini MotoE™) finished in eighth for the second time on Saturday and would finish ahead of Miquel Pons (Axxis-MSI) and Ongetta SIC58 Squadra Corse’s Kevin Manfredi, who took the final position inside the top 10.

It is not long until MotoE™ returns as the paddock heads to Mugello next weekend for the Italian Grand Prix, so make sure you keep up to date with the action on motogp.com!
