Dixon bags late pole position from Moreira as Garcia crashes

Dixon has claimed his first pole position of the season, starting ahead of Moreira and Canet after a thrilling finale to Q2

Moto2™ returned for further drama on Saturday, with Jake Dixon (CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team) completing a fantastic day, storming to a magical pole position at the Gran Premio GoPro de Aragon. The British rider improved on his final lap, setting a 1:51.636 and earning a 0.134s gap to Diogo Moreira (Italtrans Racing Team) in P2. It was a great session for the Brazilian, who was a mere 0.014s ahead of Aron Canet (Fantic Racing), who rounds off a competitive front row ahead of Sunday.

Garcia crashes in Q1 as the battle for pole begins

It was an unchanged top 10 in Practice 2 due to overnight rain, leaving some key contenders to battle in Q1. Some of those names included MT Helmets – MSI’s Sergio Garcia and Ai Ogura, who had a tough task ahead which soon got worse once qualifying got underway as Sergio Garcia (MT Helmets – MSI) suffered crashing at Turn 7 – placing the Championship leader outside the top 20. Meanwhile, Zonta Van Den Goorbergh (RW-Idrofoglia Racing GP), Tony Arbolino (Elf Marc VDS Racing Team), Ogura and Filip Salac (Elf Marc VDS Racing Team) would earn their place in Q2 – leading to a dramatic session.

Once Q2 got underway, Moreira initially claimed the top spot before the second runs got underway and Canet took provisional pole. The #44’s time would stand until the final lap where Moreira reclaimed P1 briefly before Dixon pipped the #10 for pole position in Aragon after a phenomenal lap.

Strong qualifying for Öncü

Deniz Öncü (Red Bull KTM Ajo) completed a fantastic qualifying in fourth place, heading the second row of the grid after setting a 1:51.923. The Moto2™ rookie will start in front of Arbolino, who secured P5 after going through Q1. The Italian ended the session ahead of Albert Arenas (QJMOTOR Gresini Moto2™) in sixth, who will have a grid penalty to serve on Sunday.

Continuing a strong weekend was Sync SpeedUp’s Alonso Lopez, who ended the session in seventh and will start from P6 on the grid due to Arenas' penalty. The #21 finished ahead of Joe Roberts (OnlyFans American Racing Team) and Celestino Vietti (Red Bull KTM Ajo) as his teammate Fermin Aldeguer (Sync SpeedUp) is forced to start from 11th. Further back, Ogura was unable to piece together a good lap in Q2, starting from 16th as his teammate Garcia will have to fight from 28th on the grid.

The action in Aragon is not over yet, make sure you join us for race day on Sunday with lights out at 12:15 local time (UTC +2)!
