Game on: Marc Marquez overcomes the largest points deficit in history

A 102-point gap just seven rounds ago is now the championship lead – find out more about the #93’s Championship comeback so far as Aprilia reload for a response

Marc Marquez (Ducati Lenovo Team) etched his name into the history books once more at Misano. The #93’s latest win puts him equal on points with Jorge Martin (Aprilia Racing) at the head of the standings, and ahead on wins. Just seven rounds ago, Marc Marquez sat 102 points adrift of the Championship leader. Now, Martin and Aprilia Racing teammate Marco Bezzecchi will be looking for a response.

If Marc Marquez is crowned World Champion this year, it’ll be the biggest points comeback in MotoGP history. He’ll beat the previous record held by 2022 World Champion and his current teammate Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team), when the Italian overcame a 91-point deficit over Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP). Other comebacks include Joan Mir in 2020 (48 points) and Marc Marquez himself back in 2017 (37 points).

102 POINTS TO TITLE LEADER

The comeback story started at Le Mans, where a Turn 13 crash forced the #93 to sit on the sidelines after fracturing the fifth metatarsal. Watching the Catalan GP from home, Marc Marquez was back for the Italian GP, ending his return in P7. Balaton Park began his return to form, defeating Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) in an epic scrap to secure the maximum 37 points available and his first GP victory of 2026.

A further four victories followed at Brno, Sachsenring, Aragon and Misano, scoring a total of 102 points in the last seven rounds. With Martin ending the San Marino GP in P5, Marc Marquez sits tied on points but ahead on win countback. Now, as just eight rounds remain, is the #93 the new title favourite?

Reflecting on the San Marino GP and his title aspirations, Marc Marquez said: "There was no chance, now there’s a chance. It’s true that it was a super good weekend; I approached the weekend feeling free and relaxed. My mentality and my mind were flowing, and I was convinced of what I needed to be fast."

Ducati Lenovo Team Manager, Davide Tardozzi, weighed in: "I think here in Misano, Marc showed who he is, but on the other hand, we know that there are still eight races to go. There are a lot of points in play, and we know our opponents perfectly, so we must remain concentrated race by race and try to collect more points if possible.

"We have experience (in title fights), but I guess Marc has more experience than us. So we trust Marc in every situation."
