KymiRing edges closer to completion

Finnish circuit is close to being ready for action as they look set to host MotoGP™ races from 2020

The new KymiRing track is nearing its completion as an agreement between circuit bosses and Dorna is in place for the Finnish layout to host MotoGP™ races between 2020 and 2024.

The date of the Finnish round will be confirmed after a MotoGP™ test has taken place at the circuit, which is said to be in place in either August or September this year. When complete, the KymiRing will be 4.5km in length and will be composed of 18 corners and a 1.2km straight.

Tapio Nevala, President of the Finnish Motor Union, believes staging a MotoGP™ race will be a huge financial benefit for the area and spoke during a press conference on the 16th January, which included Markku Pietilä, President and CEO of KymiRing.

“The number of viewers of KymiRing MotoGP is estimated to be between 100,000 and 150,000 spectators. For example, the direct financial impact of the Valencia GP is €38 million,” said Nevala.

“Finland has a long and fine tradition of motorsport, and Finnish know-how as an event organiser and motorsports operator is trusted,” he continued. “The MotoGP competition is of great importance to Finnish motorcycle racing, as the recognition of the series increases in Finland and on the other hand, it is easier for Finnish riders to compete in international classes.”
