Marquez: “We had to take a risk”

Marquez: “We had to take a risk”

A crash in the Octo British Grand Prix ends any chance of Marc Marquez claiming a third successive MotoGP™ crown.

A rain hit Silverstone made for an interesting start to Sunday’s British Grand Prix. Marc Marquez’s race pace in the dry had been almost untouchable, but this meant nothing as the wet race got underway. Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) had taken an early lead but Marquez and Rossi were able to pass him and the pair set about breaking away from the rest of the MotoGP™ field. Marquez and his Repsol Honda were sat comfortably behind Rossi and were six seconds ahead of the riders fighting for third. Unfortunately on Lap 13 Marquez fell at Turn 1, ending his race and title chances.

While it is still mathematically possible for Marquez to claim the championship, making up a 77 point deficit to Rossi would take a super human effort from Marquez and incredible bad luck from both Movistar Yamaha rider. Even with the bitter disappointment of his fourth DNF in 2015, Marquez was pleased to once again be at the front of the MotoGP™ field. The remaining rounds will be interesting for Marquez who now has nothing to lose. 2014 saw Marquez in the opposite situation, having already secured the MotoGP™ title at this stage.

Marc Marquez: “The World Championship situation was already complicated before this Grand Prix, and now it is even more difficult, but it is also true that this was a race where we had to take a risk. I felt I had the race under control and I crashed out. It means zero points, but the fact that we were back up at the front again was the positive side of today."
