Best of Italy: Mugello classics!

Enjoy a selection of memorable Mugello races from 2006 to 2019 as we get set for another date with the iconic Tuscan layout this weekend

A rider and fan favourite, the Italian Grand Prix and Mugello have provided many great memories and races down the years. So, as we get set for Round 9 of 2025 at the iconic layout, why not get yourselves in the mood by watching some of the best races we’ve seen at Mugello – for free?

2006 – Rossi fends off Capirossi and Hayden

Two Italians vs the Kentucky Kid and eventual World Champion. The 2006 Italian GP was a fascinating fight between Valentino Rossi, Loris Capirossi and Nicky Hayden, the trio who would finish first, second and third in the Championship. Rossi was coming off the back of two consecutive DNFs and it was the #46 who clinched an important victory, with the podium finishers split by just 0.7s at the flag.

2009 – Stoner wins flag-to-flag encounter

A dramatic Italian GP played out in 2009 as a drying Mugello circuit saw a flag-to-flag belter unfold. The switch from wet tyres to slicks saw Casey Stoner chase down race leader Andrea Dovizioso, then keep hard-charging Yamaha teammates Jorge Lorenzo and Rossi behind him to end the latter’s fantastic victory run on home soil.

2016 – Lorenzo steals victory from Marquez

0.019s. That unforgettable final lap and run to the chequered flag between rivals Lorenzo and Marc Marquez, coupled with Rossi’s race-ending engine breakdown, made the 2016 Italian GP one to remember – unless you were a VR46 fan, of course. It was a win that put Lorenzo 10 points clear of Marquez in the title chase, but as we know, it would be the #93 who would collect the MotoGP crown at the end of the year.

2018 – Lorenzo’s first win in red

Having made the switch from Yamaha to Ducati for the 2017 season, it wasn’t until the 2018 Italian GP that we really saw Lorenzo’s potential with the Italian marque. A dominant six-second victory was the beginning of a mid-season run that saw the three-time MotoGP World Champion win three of the six races from Mugello to Austria, before injuries curtailed the end of his campaign.

2019 – Petrucci’s emotional home GP win

A year later, Ducati stood on the top step at Mugello again – but this time it was an incredibly emotional 25-point haul for Danilo Petrucci. A spellbinding battle between the popular Italian, his teammate Dovizioso, Marquez and Alex Rins lit up Mugello on a famous Sunday afternoon in Tuscany.

More of the same this time around? That will go down nicely!
