Rider Story

Alex de Angelis made his Grand Prix debut at age 16 after starring in the Italian and European Championships. In his first full season in the 125cc class in 2000 he was named Rookie of the Year, with his best season coming in 2003 when he claimed six podium finishes and finished second to Dani Pedrosa. In 2004 he moved to the 250cc class, with 2006 his best season where he finished third in the standings after eleven podiums. De Angelis stepped up to the MotoGP™ class in 2008 for two full seasons, riding for the Gresini Honda team and achieving his best finish in 2009 with a second place at the Indianapolis GP. In 2010, he moved to the new Moto2™ class, but returned to MotoGP™ for three races to replace an injured Hiroshi Aoyama. 2011 saw the rider from San Marino back in the Moto2™ class on a full-time basis, where he finished fourth overall after 13 top-ten finishes including a win in Australia and a third place at the German GP. In 2012, De Angelis joined the NGM Mobile Forward Racing outfit to contest for the title in his third year in Moto2™, yet bike issues and a chassis change half way through the season put paid to any title hopes. He remained with the team for 2013 yet on a Speed Up machine instead of the FTR, whilst in 2014 he tried his luck for Tasca Racing Moto2™ on the Suter. However, midseason he got the chance to return to MotoGP™ in place of retiring rider Colin Edwards, at his former Moto2™ team in the Forward Racing set-up. In 2015 he raced for the IodaRacing Team on an Aprilia based on the CRT bike. It was a difficult season and De Angelis scored just two points. A crash during the Japanese GP saw him rushed to hospital and ended his season early. For 2016 he came back with the IodaRacing Team aboard an Aprilia once more but in WorldSBK, taking a podium at the Lausitzring. He switched to Pedercini Racing for 2017 and was a solid presence in the points, and he also returned to the MotoGP™ paddock in Moto2™ with Tasca Racing at three races. A new challenge for the veteran awaited in 2019 as he tackled MotoE™ with Alma Pramac Racing, claiming two P4s. De Angelis stays with the team for 2020 as he aims to earn that illusive first MotoE™ podium.
