Ogura seals first pole of 2024 with a new lap record

The #79 will start Sunday from pole position alongside Canet and Moreira after a tense battle in qualifying

Ai Ogura (MT Helmets – MSI) has taken an unbelievable pole position at the Monster Energy British Grand Prix and secured his first pole since the 2022 Malaysian Grand Prix. Ogura also stole a new lap record from Aron Canet (Fantic Racing), who heads from second position, after the Spaniard missed out by a mere 0.052s. Joining Ogura and Canet on the front row for Sunday's Grand Prix will be the impressive Diogo Moreira (Italtrans Racing Team), who pulled off a stunning time to leap up the order.

Canet vs Ogura in Q2

It was an important Q1 session for GT Trevisan SpeedUp’s Fermin Aldeguer, with changes made to his motorcycle from Practice 2, leading to fast times on track with the #54 topping the session. Aldeguer secured a Q2 spot to the relief of the SpeedUp team. Joining the Spaniard in Q2 were Albert Arenas (QJMOTOR Gresini Moto2™), Bo Bendsneyder (Preicanos Racing Team) and Jeremy Alcoba (Yamaha VR46 Master Camp Team). It was red hot pace at the beginning of Q2 with the lap record broken instantly as Ai Ogura (MT Helmets – MSI) hit the top.

Canet responded to Ogura’s relentless pace, decreasing his advantage to just 0.052s at the end of the first run. Times were improving throughout the field with Moreira leaping to third place after an impressive time. However, nobody could match Ogura’s time in the final run, allowing the #79 to be P1 on Saturday.

Key contenders outside the top 10

Back on the second row of the grid will be Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Celestino Vietti, who has had a very consistent weekend - starting in fourth position. The Italian will be joined by Jake Dixon (CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team), who will launch from fifth position. Next to Dixon on the second row will be Albert Arenas (QJMOTOR Gresini Moto2™), who qualified sixth place on the grid.

Heading the third row of the grid will be Arenas’ teammate Manuel Gonzalez (QJMOTOR Gresini Moto2™) in seventh position – a further 0.001s behind. Bendsneyder will line up in the middle of the third row in eighth position after a strong result to place ahead of Championship contender, Joe Roberts (OnlyFans American Racing Team). However, some key contenders will start behind Roberts with GT Trevisan SpeedUp’s Alonso Lopez and Fermin Aldeguer starting from 10th and 11th on the grid. The SpeedUp duo will have work to do, just like the Championship leader Sergio Garcia (MT Helmets – MSI), who starts down on the sixth row in 16th.

It is lights out next time for Moto2™ on Sunday at 14:30 local time (UTC +1), so make sure you don’t miss a beat on motogp.com!
