Phillip Island classics: the best of the Australian GP

Sit back and witness five incredible battles we’ve seen at the magical Phillip Island over the years – proving anything can happen Down Under

The home of surprises, the home of final lap scraps, the home of drama – MotoGP™ has landed at Phillip Island. Excitement is building, and if last year was anything to go by, we’ve got an unmissable weekend on our hands. There have been so many iconic moments over the years, from shock penalties to final corner deciders, and now you can relive just some of those moments for FREE!

2003 – Rossi’s 10-second penalty

Valentino Rossi started the 2003 Australian GP from pole in what would be a memorable day for more than one reason. Marco Melandri took an early lead before getting tangled with Troy Bayliss. Rossi found himself at the front before the GP was turned on its head as the #46 received a 10-second penalty for overtaking under yellow flags. He put the hammer down, beginning one of the most impressive performances we’ve ever seen. Rossi stretched the margin to 15.212s at the flag, making his official winning margin 5.212s over Loris Capirossi and Nicky Hayden.

2004 – Rossi wraps up title and beats Gibernau

Our trip to Phillip Island in 2004 brought another instalment of Valentino Rossi vs Sete Gibernau. It was drama from lights out, where, after a brave start, Gibernau and Rossi stormed into the distance. The pair locked horns until the final lap, with everything being decided on the run to the flag. Rossi snatched victory from Gibernau, winning by just 0.097s. This was enough for Rossi to become the 2004 MotoGP World Champion, completing the first chapter of what would become a remarkable switch to Yamaha.

2013 – Lorenzo wins as Marquez suffers black flag drama

Drama. The only word which can be used to describe the 2013 Australian GP. With a mandatory bike swap in place for safety reasons, Jorge Lorenzo took the lead on the opening laps after launching from pole. The key moment arrived when the field began to pit, with Marc Marquez remaining out until the end of Lap 11. This was outside the window, with the #93 receiving a black flag, resulting in disqualification. Lorenzo stormed to victory, beating Dani Pedrosa and Valentino Rossi, even if the headlines were made by the #93.

2015 – An all-time classic Down Under

Overtakes, high-speed drama and unbelievable moves, the 2015 Australian GP had it all, with a whole host of manufacturers fighting for glory. Marc Marquez started the GP from pole, with Andrea Iannone stealing the advantage in the opening stages on board the Ducati. Both Jorge Lorenzo and Marquez took turns at the front, with Valentino Rossi also in the mix. Lorenzo led onto the final lap from Marquez, with the #93 setting up a spectacular move at Lukey Heights, stealing victory as Lorenzo took second and Iannone third.

2022 – Rins steals the show by 0.186s

Our visit to Phillip Island came at the perfect time in 2022, with tension rising as just a handful of points separated Francesco Bagnaia and Fabio Quartararo in the World Championship. Jorge Martin led the opening laps before Quartararo hit the deck on Lap 11. Meanwhile, Alex Rins, Bagnaia and Marc Marquez battled for glory in true Australian GP fashion. Rins held firm, charging to victory over Marquez and Bagnaia – pure drama.

Like what you’ve seen? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered as we head Down Under with just two points separating Martin and Marc Marquez. See you there!
