Talking Points: “That mistake helped me win today”

The Catalan GP delivered drama from start to finish, with Round 15 of the season dishing out some of the biggest talking points

The 2025 Monster Energy Grand Prix of Catalonia was a weekend to remember, with Alex Marquez (BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP) writing a true redemption story as the #73 secured his second Sunday victory of the season. Alex Marquez took the maximum 25 points available, making it impossible for brother Marc Marquez (Ducati Lenovo Team) to clinch the title in Misano. The #93 crossed the line in second as Enea Bastianini took third in a big weekend for everyone at Red Bull KTM Tech3. Now, as we begin to recover from another unforgettable weekend, catch up on the hottest talking points!

"That mistake helped me win today"

Alex Marquez redeemed himself on Sunday, bouncing back after crashing out from the lead in the Sprint. The #73 delivered, seizing the lead on Lap 4 and setting a sensational pace in Barcelona. It was an impressive ride, with Alex Marquez claiming victory on home turf by 1.740s ahead of his brother. Reflecting on the weekend, the Grand Prix winner admitted that Saturday’s Turn 10 mistake ultimately helped him secure Sunday’s victory.

Alex Marquez: "That mistake still played in my head, but it was the best way to forget about it a little bit. I need to say that mistake helped me win today because I was already braking so late in the corner when I made that mistake. I am really happy with how we managed the race. It was not easy to keep Marc behind for 24 laps. Just trying to manage the tyres and manage everything else. I just did my best. I just tried not to make any mistakes, just always on my lines. I’m happy for this, it's the best way to come back in the results. It was so important for us at a track like this."

"My main strategy was to follow him"

Marc Marquez’ win streak came to an end on Sunday, as the #93 stood off the top step of the podium for the first time since Silverstone. However, he still delivered a rock-solid ride, earning a crucial 20 points and moving one step closer to the title. While Marc may have to wait until at least Motegi to secure the MotoGP World Championship, he remains positive after sticking to his strategy throughout the weekend.

Marc Marquez: "I tried all weekend to do my maximum. Since FP1, he (Alex) was one or two tenths faster than me. With a new tyre, he was a bit faster, but especially with the used tyre. It was a bit too much for me, with the rhythm that he was able to do. But anyway, I tried. In the first part of the race, my main strategy was to follow him, even for one lap. On Lap 3 or 4, I rolled the gas a bit on the straight because the strategy was to be behind him, save the tyres, and open a gap to the third-placed guy to try and attack in the last part of the race. That's what I did, when there were seven, eight laps left, I tried to give one last push."

"My first real podium with KTM"

Enea Bastianini capped off an emotional weekend for the Red Bull KTM Tech3 squad, delivering his first Sunday podium for KTM. It was a big weekend, with the announcement that a consortium led by Guenther Steiner will take full ownership of the team from 2026. Reflecting on the Grand Prix, Bastianini shared his feelings after crossing the line in third position.

Bastianini: "Today has been a very tough race because of the start. I tried to manage the tyre, like the other riders, and I was behind Pedro. I saw Pedro lose some time to Marc, and I thought, it’s time to overtake him and try to follow. In the end, Alex also changed pace, and for me today it was impossible to do the same. But I can be satisfied with that result. My first podium with Tech3, for my first real podium with KTM.

"A nice welcome from him. I think in Brno, there was a new CEO from KTM when we got a podium in the Sprint. And today, the new boss of Tech3 and I got a podium. I am waiting for what the news will be for Misano."

"I was using a lot of the rear tyre"

Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) endured another challenging weekend in Barcelona, qualifying 21st on the grid and finishing 14th in Saturday’s Sprint. However, his race pace remained strong, charging through the field to finish in seventh position on Sunday. The Italian had plenty to reflect on and will now wait until we arrive in Misano before setting any expectations.

Bagnaia: "I feel more or less like I did at Balaton on Sunday. But today, starting from P21, it was difficult to imagine anything more. So, I'm quite happy with the result. It's true that to gain and to recover all these positions I was using a lot of the rear tyre, and in the last part of the race I was without grip, but it's a good result. I would really like to arrive in Misano with this kind of speed and this kind of competitiveness and see if I can be in the front.

"I don't want to do the same as Balaton, where I arrived convinced that I could be competitive here. So, I will take a step back and wait until Misano to see what I can do."

"It's been a very tough weekend"

Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia Racing) had an incredibly tough weekend, scoring no points in Barcelona and recording his first Sunday DNF since the German GP. The #72 qualified 12th and began to fight in the Sprint before an incident with Fermin Aldeguer (BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP) forced the Italian to watch from the sidelines. On Sunday, Bezzecchi crashed on Lap 2, ending hopes of points and leaving the Italian to reflect on the weekend.

Bezzecchi: "It's been a very tough weekend. On Friday, the expectations were a bit better as it was a positive day for me. But then, unfortunately, in qualifying, I wasn't good enough to get a good lap, so because of this, I started further back, and we weren't good enough to turn the weekend around again one more time. We just have to try to understand and then be back in Misano in a better shape.

"I feel pain, especially in my left hip, but I still have the painkiller that I took for the race, so at the moment I feel quite good. It's nothing crazy, I mean, it's just I got hit by the bike and that's it."
